What motivates you or your child to study?

What motivates you or your child to study?

Extrinsic and intrinsic motivation can play an important role in learning settings.

Rewards/punishment vs. personally rewarding activities - essentially, performing an activity for its own sake

External rewards are about behaviour control. Skinner could train rats to do what he wanted them to do, but doing that to a child is stressing that child (They might do what you want them for a while, but at what cost?).

  Rewards

Reward is one of the components of change and forming good habits. The student can put this in place for her/himself, for example visiting a friend after completing 8 sessions of study.

What you as parent want to be interested in, are the needs of your child - responding on his/her needs and to what is going on in his/her mind.

Needs refer to things that we all need to live a good life. Some examples are closeness, attachment, involvement, contact, cooperation, acceptance, peace, space, independence and to have a purpose and to contribute to others.
To look at what is going on in his/her behaviour and the emotions expressed, will connect you to what needs are not met. The needs of both people in the relationship can be fulfilled by one another by negotiating.
