Mind Maps?!

Does it help to use Mind Maps?

Yes, it sorts out information and ideas in a creative way after you have studied the detail. You take control and improve your thinking skills.

Taking notes in mind map form gives you a structure and you are able to leave gaps when you miss something that was said. It gives you a head start because it helps you to understand information. You are able to concentrate and stay interested and important exam questions can be noted.

It can be used in the exams to plan longer answers and essays.
Mind maps help you to remember what you’ve studied in the following ways:

1. If something stands out, you remember it!
- Natural strengths, like vision, hearing and sensing can be used to emphasise the work.
An example of using your vision on mind maps is drawing a “moving” branch to hold the main ideas. The locality of that particular fact strengthens your memory.
- Other fun techniques (for example mnemonics) and graphic designs (like triangles or circles that overlap) can be added onto the mind map.

2. You remember by associating the concepts. It means you are focusing and pay attention and you want to make sense of the work.
- The humorous, ridiculous or exaggerated picture that you see in your mind’s eye can be drawn onto the branch.
- It is exciting, pleasant and calming to doodle.
- 3 or 4 colours are used to organise your structure.

3. Repeating 5 times puts information into the long-term memory.
- Having made mind maps speed up revision.
- To repeat, “Role play” the teacher (using your map) and listen to the song or video that you made of it.
- You remember more than you’ve learnt in the first place because your brain’s grappling hooks latch onto other connected things.

Mind maps even help you to plan your exam schedule.
